Kindiki Launches Mount Kenya Charm Offensive to Counter Gachagua’s 2027 Campaign
IRUNDUNI, THARAKA NITHI — Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has taken the battle for Mount Kenya to his home turf, mounting a tactical counter-offensive against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as political rivalries intensify ahead of the 2027 general election.
For months, Gachagua has used his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri as a political sanctuary, hosting delegations and allies to consolidate regional discontent against President William Ruto’s administration.
Gachagua’s stated mission remains rallying the vote-rich region to ensure President Ruto is voted out of office in 2027.
In response, DP Kindiki has adopted a similar strategy, hosting massive delegations at his Irunduni rural residence in Tharaka Nithi County to champion the Kenya Kwanza government’s development agenda and defend President Ruto’s re-election bid.

Engaging Grassroots Leaders
On Thursday, August 6, 2026, Kindiki hosted over 18,000 grassroots women and youth leaders from Meru County, marking one of his largest political engagements at his home base.
During the session, the Deputy President briefed delegates on key economic programs tailored for Mount Kenya’s welfare.
“The Government appreciates the role of women and the youth in building the economy of the nation. The fresh produce markets being constructed will offer dignified trading spaces for small-scale traders, the majority being women,” DP Kindiki stated online following the event.
Kindiki highlighted several flagship initiatives aimed at economic empowerment:
- Dignified Markets: Construction of modern fresh produce market hubs.
- Youth Employment: Expanding opportunities through affordable housing projects, digital jobs, and overseas recruitment programs.
- Targeted Support: Empowerment schemes such as the NYOTA project.
As the political tug-of-war between Wamunyoro and Irunduni escalates, Kindiki’s strategic mobilization underscores the high stakes of winning back Mount Kenya’s allegiance ahead of the next polls.
