Murkomen’s Wife Fires Back at Gachagua Over “Return to Mount Kenya” Remarks
RIFT VALLEY — Gladys Wanjiru, the wife of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, has forcefully responded to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following his recent political comments suggesting she should be sent back to her native home in Mount Kenya.
The exchange erupted after Gachagua, speaking on a recent campaign trail, criticized CS Murkomen’s stance on political matters affecting the Mount Kenya region. In a sharp personal jab, Gachagua claimed that since Murkomen was allegedly anti-Mount Kenya, he ought to return his wife—a native Kikuyu from Mukurweini—back to her ancestral home.
Addressing a public gathering in the Rift Valley, Wanjiru broke her silence on the matter, dismissing Gachagua’s demands as misguided and political grandstanding. She firmly reminded the crowd that her marriage was a personal decision, emphasizing that no politician or third party was involved when she chose to build a life with her husband.

“Nobody asked me to move in with my husband, and therefore, no one has the authority to ask me to leave or go back to Mukurweini for political reasons,” she declared, reiterating that her roots in her marriage were deep and secure.
Her response comes amid growing frustration from Murkomen over Gachagua’s repeated mentions of his family at public rallies. The Interior CS had previously called out the former Deputy President for dragging private citizens into national political rivalries rather than debating actual policies.
The spat highlights the increasingly personal tone of Kenyan political discourse, as leaders trade public barbs ahead of upcoming political contests. Wanjiru’s decisive response signals a strong refusal to allow tribal politics or personal attacks to dictate her marriage or dictate her family’s place in society.
