Meru, Kenya — Several pupils at Meru Primary School fainted. Police fired teargas canisters into their classrooms on Thursday, August 30, 2024.

The incident occurred during efforts to disperse protesters demonstrating against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

A video widely shared online shows a chaotic scene. Children are coughing and struggling to breathe. The teargas filled their classrooms.

The alarming situation prompted the school administration to call for emergency medical assistance. Ambulances arrived at the scene to ferry the affected pupils to nearby hospitals for treatment

The teargas was reportedly fired. Police attempted to disperse a group of protesters who had gathered near the school. The protesters wanted to express their dissatisfaction with Governor Mwangaza’s continued stay in office. The governor has been a subject of controversy following her impeachment by the Senate.

However, a court ruling allowed her to remain in office. Her case will be heard and determined. The ruling sparked outrage among Meru residents.

This marks the third consecutive day of protests against Governor Mwangaza, with demonstrators calling for her immediate removal from office.

The protests have intensified. Residents are expressing frustration over what they perceive as a failure of the justice system. They believe it has failed to hold the governor accountable.

The incident at Meru Primary School has sparked widespread condemnation. Many Kenyans are taking to social media to criticize the use of excessive force by the police.

They are upset with the police’s actions in dispersing the protesters. This is especially concerning in close proximity to a school.

Human rights groups have also weighed in. They are calling for an investigation into the matter. They are urging the authorities to ensure the safety of school children during public demonstrations.

The situation in Meru remains tense. Residents continue to demand action. The affected pupils and their families await a response from the authorities regarding the incident.
