Former Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho has finally weighed in on the controversy surrounding allegations that Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohammed siphoned funds meant for Azimio La Umoja agents during the 2022 General Election.
The claims have dominated political discourse for nearly two weeks, sparking sharp divisions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the broader Azimio coalition.
The allegations were publicly raised by ODM Secretary General and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who, while speaking at a funeral service in Murang’a County, claimed that Junet misappropriated money allegedly provided by former President Uhuru Kenyatta to facilitate payment of Azimio polling agents.
According to Sifuna, the failure to pay agents demoralized the coalition’s grassroots machinery, ultimately undermining Raila Odinga’s presidential bid as agents were left confused and frustrated on election day.

However, Joho has dismissed the accusations, urging caution and restraint as tempers continue to flare. Speaking in a video that has since circulated widely on social media, the former governor said there was no evidence to support claims that Junet “ate” the agents’ money.
Joho argued that if such a serious wrongdoing had occurred, Raila Odinga—known for his firm grip on party discipline—would have taken action against Junet long before the matter spilled into the public arena.
“Junet remained close to Raila throughout the campaign period and beyond. If there was any betrayal of that magnitude, it would not have gone unnoticed or unaddressed,” Joho said.
He further called on Kenyans and ODM supporters to allow investigations or internal party mechanisms to handle the issue, rather than resorting to public attacks based on allegations.
Joho warned that unsubstantiated claims risk deepening rifts within the opposition at a time when unity remains critical.
As the debate continues, pressure is mounting on ODM leadership to clarify what transpired in 2022 and whether any formal audit of Azimio campaign funds will be conducted to put the matter to rest.
