Orengo Defies Impeachment Threats, Demands Immediate Action on National Crisis
SIAYA, KENYA — In a bold political maneuver, Siaya Governor James Orengo has effectively ignored the impeachment threats leveled against him by the Siaya County Assembly.
Instead of addressing the controversy surrounding his remarks about Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Orengo has shifted the spotlight to a national crisis, issuing a high-stakes communique to the national government.
The Pivot from Local Politics
The move comes just hours after Siaya MCAs threatened to oust the Governor following controversial remarks he made in Homa Bay County.
The legislators interpreted his comments as a direct attack on Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, characterizing them as disrespectful to women leadership.
However, rather than offering an apology or a defense against the impeachment motion, Orengo has taken to his social media platforms to pivot the national conversation toward the escalating cost of living and police conduct.

Economic Ultimatum: The “Fuel Crisis”
In a detailed statement titled “Urgent National Issues Requiring Immediate Government Action,” signing as the “Defacto ODM Party Leader,” Orengo highlighted a disturbing trend of human rights violations and economic instability.
To mitigate the current fuel crisis and ease the burden on struggling households, the Governor proposed an aggressive fiscal intervention strategy.
He has challenged President William Ruto’s administration to implement a direct Ksh 54 reduction in Diesel prices.
Orengo’s proposed matrix for the price reduction includes:
- Value Added Tax (VAT): A temporary reduction to 0%.
- Fuel Levy: A reduction of Ksh 7.
- Margins: A cut of Ksh 4 for importers and marketers.
- Direct Subsidy: Provision of Ksh 5 billion specifically for Diesel.
Debt and Human Rights Concerns
Orengo’s critique also focused on Kenya’s “unprecedented debt levels.” Citing National Treasury data, he noted that the public debt has surged to a record Ksh 12.84 trillion, pushing the debt-to-GDP ratio to an alarming 69.5%.
He warned that this trajectory poses a severe threat to national macroeconomic stability.
Beyond economics, the Governor demanded accountability for “police excesses.”
He cited reports of four citizens losing their lives—three shot dead and one run over by a police vehicle—during recent protests.
He urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to fast-track investigations into these “state-sanctioned killings.”
A Message to the Public
While the Governor called on the public to remain peaceful and avoid the destruction of property to maintain the legitimacy of their grievances, his message was clear: the political heat in Siaya will not distract him from challenging the national executive.
By positioning himself as a defender of constitutional rights and an economic reformer, Orengo has effectively raised the stakes of his political survival, turning a local impeachment threat into a national showdown.
