Residents of Rumuruti town gathered in large numbers as leaders, traders and community members witnessed an event many described as a turning point for local commerce.
Expectations were high as national and county leaders spoke of transformation, opportunity and long term economic impact for ordinary citizens whose livelihoods depend on trade and agriculture.
President William Ruto officially launched the construction of the Rumuruti Modern Market in Laikipia County, a project expected to significantly reshape trading activities in the region.
Once completed, the modern facility will accommodate more than 750 traders, providing structured stalls, improved sanitation, storage facilities and enhanced security.
The market is part of a KSh260 million investment aimed at creating jobs and expanding business opportunities for residents.
During the construction phase, the project is expected to generate employment for local youth, while completion will offer a more organized and reliable trading environment for vendors who currently operate in open air or temporary setups
The atmosphere reflected growing optimism among small-scale traders who have for years operated under challenging conditions.
For many, the promises made during the ceremony pointed to improved dignity, safety and access to customers. While the speeches focused on development and empowerment, the full scope of the initiative only became clear later in the address.A

President Ruto emphasized that the initiative aligns with his administration’s bottom up economic agenda, which prioritizes empowering small traders and strengthening grassroots economies.
He noted that modern markets are critical in reducing post harvest losses, improving hygiene standards and enabling traders to access wider markets.
In addition to the Rumuruti project, the President revealed that the government is constructing 14 modern markets across Laikipia County.
These markets are intended to boost agribusiness by creating direct links between farmers, traders and consumers, while also supporting value addition and fair pricing for agricultural produce.
Local leaders welcomed the move, saying the markets would stimulate economic growth, increase county revenue and improve livelihoods.
Traders expressed hope that the new facilities would attract more customers and protect them from harsh weather and insecurity.
As construction begins, residents are optimistic that the project will mark a new chapter for Rumuruti and position Laikipia County as a growing hub for agribusiness and trade.
