DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua has unveiled a noticeably different political approach following the United Opposition’s defeat in the Mbeere North by-election, a shift that has sparked widespread discussion among Kenyans.
In the weeks leading up to the by-election, the former Deputy President was a constant presence on the campaign trail, actively rallying support for DCP candidate Karish, who was widely expected to win against Wamudhende.
However, the unexpected loss appears to have prompted a strategic rethink within Gachagua’s camp.
According to close allies, Gachagua has temporarily scaled back public rallies and instead adopted a consultative, behind-the-scenes strategy centered at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County.
The meetings, they say, are aimed at listening to grassroots leaders, party officials, and special interest groups to better understand voter sentiment in the Mount Kenya region and beyond.

Since the Mbeere North defeat, Wamunyoro has hosted a series of high-profile delegations. Gachagua recently received leaders from Lari Constituency in Kiambu County, led by Hon. Karichu, for discussions reviewing the political developments of 2025.
He has also met members of the DCP Party Diaspora Chapter during the Christmas period, where they briefed him on the growth of party chapters abroad and plans to open satellite offices in other continents next year.
The DCP leader further highlighted what he termed as the party’s recent successes in by-elections in Kakamega, Narok, and Nairobi City County, using them as indicators of growing national support.
In addition, Gachagua has engaged youth leaders, including representatives from Daystar University, to discuss student issues and youth participation in decision-making.
Political analysts note that the shift from mass rallies to structured consultations could be an attempt to consolidate alliances and refine messaging ahead of renewed nationwide campaigns.
Allies say once consultations are complete, Gachagua plans to return to the road “rejuvenated,” positioning himself and the United Opposition for a direct challenge against President William Ruto, who is seeking re-election.
For now, Wamunyoro has become the focal point of Gachagua’s recalibrated political strategy.
