A sombre mood has engulfed the country following the death of Dr. Job Obwaka, a respected obstetrician-gynaecologist and board director at The Nairobi Hospital.
His passing comes just weeks after a controversial incident in which he was allegedly manhandled by police officers over claims of document falsification at the facility—claims that sparked public outrage and protests demanding his release.
Dr. Obwaka’s death has reignited debate over the treatment of professionals by state agencies, with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua leading tributes while also sharply criticizing the Kenya Kwanza administration.
In a strongly worded statement, Gachagua described the late doctor as “a man of great resolve, a just and principled son of our motherland, and an intellectual par excellence.”
He praised Obwaka’s lifelong dedication to saving lives and standing for truth, noting that his courage during difficult moments would remain a defining part of his legacy.

Gachagua further claimed that Dr. Obwaka played a key role in resisting what he termed a “hostile takeover” of Nairobi Hospital, an effort he said led to the doctor’s arrest and detention despite his advanced age and reported health concerns.
According to the former deputy president, Obwaka left police custody “a broken man,” having endured trauma that he struggled to recover from in his final weeks.
Without directly naming individuals, Gachagua accused elements within the current administration of enabling intimidation and harassment, arguing that the incident reflected a broader pattern of disregard for justice and human dignity.
He called on Kenyans to reflect on the values Dr. Obwaka stood for, emphasizing integrity, courage, and moral leadership as pillars the nation must uphold.
As tributes continue to pour in from the medical fraternity and the public, many are demanding accountability and transparency surrounding the circumstances leading to Dr. Obwaka’s arrest and eventual death.
Dr. Obwaka will be remembered not only for his medical excellence but also for his unwavering stand in the face of adversity.
