Banisa Constituency’s highly anticipated by-election has taken a dramatic twist after the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate, Mr. Aden, abruptly announced his withdrawal from the race.
The decision, made just days ago, has left the party leadership reeling and supporters frustrated, with many questioning the circumstances behind his move.
Mr. Aden was widely considered the strongest contender in the by-election and was seen as a formidable challenge to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate.
His sudden exit not only altered the political landscape in Banisa but also sparked widespread speculation across the country. Many Kenyans took to social media to express shock, while his political opponents admitted they were baffled by his decision.

Speaking in Nairobi at the DCP headquarters, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua weighed in on the unfolding drama, alleging foul play at the highest level of government.
According to Gachagua, Mr. Aden was summoned to State House Nairobi, where he faced intimidation from President William Ruto and his allies.
“He was threatened with arrest and warned of dire consequences if he did not step aside for the UDA candidate,” Gachagua claimed. “This is not democracy. Forcing candidates out of the race through intimidation undermines the will of the people of Banisa.”
Gachagua’s remarks have fueled debate in political circles, with critics of the Kenya Kwanza administration accusing it of manipulating the electoral process to secure easy victories.
The allegations, however, have not been independently verified, and State House is yet to issue an official response.

Within the DCP camp, emotions ran high as party leaders lamented the blow to their chances in Banisa. “We were confident of a win, but this development has left us hopeless,” one official told reporters.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has confirmed Mr. Aden’s withdrawal but emphasized that the by-election will proceed as scheduled, with the remaining candidates still in the race.
As the dust settles, attention now shifts to whether DCP will front another candidate or allow UDA to dominate the contest unchallenged.
Meanwhile, Gachagua’s accusations against President Ruto are expected to intensify political tensions ahead of the by-election, raising questions about the state of democracy and electoral freedom in Kenya.
