Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised serious concerns over what he describes as “unexpected and unlawful activities” unfolding in Mbeere North ahead of the highly anticipated by-election.
Gachagua, who has camped in the constituency for the past five days to rally support for Hon. Karish, accused the United Democratic Party (UDP) of employing questionable tactics in an attempt to secure the seat.
Speaking during a live session with TikTok content creators on Friday, Gachagua claimed that government operatives were allegedly purchasing national identification cards from residents in areas perceived to be opposition strongholds. He singled out Muminji Ward—home to Hon. Karish—as one of the hot spots where such activities were reportedly taking place.
According to Gachagua, the alleged move is aimed at suppressing voter turnout and manipulating the electoral outcome in favour of government-backed candidates.

He termed the actions a direct threat to democratic principles, warning that the erosion of free political participation could set a dangerous precedent for future elections.
“This government is buying ID cards in Muminji and other areas where the opposition is strong,” he claimed.
“They want to disenfranchise our people so that they can control the results. I am urging the youths to be very careful. Do not allow yourselves to be deceived for a few shillings and later suffer for no reason.”
Gachagua further urged security agencies and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to investigate the allegations and ensure that the upcoming poll is conducted fairly and transparently.
The by-election in Mbeere North has drawn significant national attention, with political parties intensifying campaigns as election day approaches. The government and UDP officials are yet to respond to Gachagua’s latest claims.
