Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has broken his silence hours after police officers forcefully dispersed his political gathering in Narok Town, triggering chaos and tension among residents.
The dramatic confrontation unfolded on Monday when heavily armed police officers reportedly blocked Gachagua’s motorcade from accessing the town, leading to a standoff that ended with the use of teargas.
In video footage circulating online, officers are seen throwing teargas canisters at a crowd that had assembled to receive Gachagua and hear him campaign for the Democratic Change Party (DCP) candidate. The abrupt intervention sent supporters fleeing in panic as smoke filled the area, bringing the meeting to an abrupt halt.
Speaking shortly after the incident, Gachagua condemned the police action, accusing President William Ruto’s administration of orchestrating intimidation tactics against perceived political rivals.

According to Gachagua, the government’s attempt to disrupt his political activities reveals what he termed as the President’s “panic mode” as the political climate intensifies ahead of upcoming polls.
“This is a free country, and no leader should be blocked from speaking to the people,” Gachagua said. He faulted the state for allegedly weaponizing law enforcement instead of allowing open democratic engagement. “The use of police to violently disrupt meetings is a sign of fear, not strength,” he added.
Despite the disruption, Gachagua maintained that the people of Narok had already made up their minds and would vote for the DCP candidate. He insisted that no amount of intimidation would change residents’ political choices.
The incident has sparked fresh debate about the state of political freedoms, with leaders from various factions calling for restraint and professionalism from security agencies as campaigns gain momentum across the country.
Gachagua statement
Clear instructions had been issued by this cowardly and brutal regime to block me and my entorouge from accessing Narok Town to campaign for the DCP PARTY Candidate for Narok Ward Hon. Douglas Masikonde.
The people, a people united are stronger than all roadblocks, than all bullets, than all stones, than all teargas you have in store and high seas and than any dictator in the world!
Being a villager, I engaged my fellow villagers in Narok who guided through village paths unknown to the police and made a triumphant entry in Narok town and received by thousands of jubilant DCP supporters.
How can you beat me in my game?
The villagers triumphed and we have affirmed that the will of the people is supreme and the 27th November 2025 by-elections will spell this out clearly.
No amount of blood money, police brutality or police excessive force will cow or intimidate the people of the Republic of Kenya.
Thank you to the great people of Narok especially the young people for standing firm for us today.
The will of the people shall never be subverted at any given moment.
Kenya is not your ordinary African Country turned into a monarch!
