Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has launched a fierce political attack on Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, linking him to the persistent illicit alcohol menace affecting the Mt. Kenya region.
Addressing a public gathering, the outspoken lawmaker directly accused Kindiki of operating a manufacturing plant in Kitengela, Kajiado County, which he alleged supplies dangerous alcoholic beverages to central Kenya counties.
Speaking directly to the Deputy President, Thang’wa warned him to immediately cease transporting such products into the Mt. Kenya region, arguing that toxic liquor continues to devastate young lives and fracture families across the local communities.
His harsh remark—”Wewe Kindiki, tunaskia ndio uko na kiwanda ya kutengeneza pombe pale Kitengela, na tunakwambia ukome kuleta pombe hapa Mount Kenya”—signals escalating political tensions between regional leaders and the administration.
The senator’s claims coincide with widespread public outcry over a surge in deaths and health crises linked to toxic and counterfeit brews across Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, and neighboring areas.
While the national government, through the Ministry of Interior, has repeatedly announced nation-wide crackdowns and enforcement drives targeting illicit alcohol plants, elected Mt. Kenya politicians have questioned the political willpower and integrity of top government officials leading the efforts.
Thang’wa’s direct accusations heighten an already fragile political climate in the region, where debates over community representation, economic welfare, and public health remain contentious.
By linking high-ranking national leadership to the proliferation of killer brews, the Kiambu Senator has challenged the administration to demonstrate transparency and deal decisively with rogue manufacturing units, regardless of who owns them.
The Deputy President’s office has yet to issue an official response to the specific allegations raised by the senator.
