Blow to Uhuru and Matiang’i as Jubilee Executive Member, 6 MCAs Defect to Ruto’s UDA
NAIROBI, Kenya — In a major political setback for former President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i, key leaders from the Jubilee Party have officially dumped the outfit to join the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The mass defection was led by former Samburu County Woman Representative and Jubilee National Executive Council (NEC) member Maison Leshoomo, alongside six Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) from Samburu.
The leaders officially declared their unreserved support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The defectors were formally received into the ruling party by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki during an official ceremony.

Welcoming the team, DP Kindiki emphasized that UDA remains an inclusive home committed to bringing all Kenyan leaders together to push the national development agenda forward.
Speaking during the event, Leshoomo cited President Ruto’s transformative policies and grassroots development model as the driving force behind their decision to ditch the opposition camp.
She pledged to mobilize regional support across Samburu County and beyond to secure a decisive victory for the President in 2027.
The departure of a high-ranking NEC official like Leshoomo deals a significant blow to Uhuru Kenyatta’s efforts to maintain Jubilee’s political footprint and grassroots network.
It also undermines strategic realignments involving figures like Dr. Fred Matiang’i, who have been actively laying the groundwork to challenge President Ruto at the ballot box in 2027.
With the six MCAs anchoring UDA’s presence at the grassroots level in Samburu County, this latest move highlights a growing trend of political repositioning across the country, further consolidating President Ruto’s political dominance as the 2027 race heats up.
