COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has weighed in on the ongoing debate around possible constitutional amendments and their political implications, particularly on whether former President Uhuru Kenyatta could be allowed to vie again.
The debate was reignited a few days ago after Prime Cabinet Secretary Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, while addressing the Maragoli Cultural Festival in Vihiga County, proposed changes to the Constitution.
Mudavadi warned that Kenya could face a crisis if certain governance gaps are not addressed. Among his proposals was the creation of a formal opposition leader position at the constituency level to strengthen representation and accountability.
Speaking during an interview on a local television station, Atwoli dismissed claims that constitutional changes could threaten President William Ruto’s political future.

According to the outspoken trade unionist, even if the Constitution were amended to allow former President Uhuru Kenyatta to contest again, Ruto would still defeat him at the ballot.
Atwoli argued that President Ruto enjoys strong support among Kenyans due to what he described as a clear vision and ongoing development projects across the country.
He maintained that many voters are increasingly issue-based rather than politically biased.
He further stated that any future election would ultimately be decided by the will of the people, adding that, in his view, Ruto would secure re-election with a decisive margin.
