Former Bungoma County Senator and National Assembly Speaker, Honorable Moses Masika Wetangula, has finally broken his silence following the shocking defeat of his party, Ford Kenya, in the Chwele–Kabuchai by-election.
The by-election saw independent candidate Eric Wekesa clinch victory, dealing a major blow to Wetangula’s political influence in his backyard despite heavy campaigning by the Kenya Kwanza team.
Speaking during a funeral service in Bungoma County, Wetangula issued a stern warning to Ford Kenya members and aspirants ahead of the 2027 general election.
He made it clear that the party will no longer tolerate leaders who are disconnected from the electorate, urging aspirants to move with speed and “listen to the ground” if they hope to win future contests.

Wetangula emphasized that Ford Kenya will adopt a free and fair nomination process, insisting that no individual will be handed a direct ticket simply because of closeness to party leadership.
According to the Speaker, the party intends to give residents the freedom to choose leaders of their preference without interference or favoritism from senior figures.
“The people must decide,” Wetangula told mourners, adding that political parties that ignore the will of the electorate risk being rejected at the ballot. His remarks were widely interpreted as a direct response to the Kabuchai loss, which exposed growing dissatisfaction among voters.
The warning comes just hours after Kimilili Member of Parliament, Honorable Didmus Barasa, publicly challenged Wetangula to address individuals close to him whom he accused of misleading and embarrassing the Ford Kenya leader.
Barasa claimed that some insiders were contributing to the party’s declining fortunes in the region.
Political observers say Wetangula’s statement signals a possible shift in strategy as Ford Kenya attempts to regain trust and remain relevant in Western Kenya politics after the embarrassing by-election setback.
