National Assembly Speaker Honorable Moses Masika Wetangula has come out to defend his development record in Bungoma County following growing criticism from residents and political observers.
The backlash intensified after Ford Kenya, the party associated with Wetangula, suffered a surprising defeat in the recent Chwele–Kabuchai ward by-election, where independent candidate Eric Wekesa emerged victorious.
The loss dealt a major blow to Wetangula’s perceived political influence in the Western Kenya region, with many Kenyans questioning whether the once-dominant leader is gradually losing his grip on the ground.
Social media platforms have since been awash with debates, with critics accusing the Speaker of focusing more on national politics than addressing local development needs.

However, while speaking at a funeral service in Kabuchai, Bungoma County, Wetangula dismissed claims that he has neglected his people.
The Speaker was attending the burial of Rita Mutaki, the mother of his personal assistant, Mutaki. In a video that has since circulated online, Wetangula outlined several development projects he says he has personally influenced for the benefit of Bungoma residents.
According to Wetangula, multiple road construction projects are currently ongoing across Bungoma County, arguing that his position and political influence played a key role in ensuring their approval and implementation.
He further revealed plans for the construction of Sichei Hospital, a project he said will significantly improve healthcare services in the region once completed.
Wetangula also used the platform to issue a political warning to residents, urging them not to be misled by opposition figures.
He cautioned that voting against President William Ruto’s government could stall development projects in the county, emphasizing the importance of aligning with the current administration to secure resources.
Despite his explanation, political analysts say the coming months will be critical in determining whether Wetangula can rebuild trust with the electorate and reclaim his influence in Bungoma and the wider Western region.
