Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has reopened debate regarding past presidential contests, claiming that the opposition coalition successfully defeated their competitors in the 2017 general election.
Speaking in Kitui County, Kalonzo asserted that the opposition secured a second consecutive victory following their contested 2013 run, emphasizing that former President Uhuru Kenyatta was well aware of the true outcome of the vote while serving as head of state.
Addressing critics who questioned why Kenyatta failed to secure the presidency for the opposition during subsequent transitions despite controlling the instruments of state power, Kalonzo defended the former president.
He explained that while Kenyatta possessed full institutional knowledge of the election results, ultimate authority regarding the formal announcement of winners rested strictly with the chairperson of the electoral commission.
Consequently, executive authority could not directly dictate the official outcome certified by the electoral body.
Shifting focus away from the former head of state, Kalonzo identified the principal architect of the political strategy behind their electoral performance.
Contrary to popular assumptions attributing the coalition’s organization to Kenyatta, Kalonzo stated that the operational framework and strategy were directed by his own office during his tenure as deputy leader within the opposition hierarchy.
Reflecting on past elections, Kalonzo noted that victory was secured twice against the incumbent administration, only for the final declared results to reflect a different narrative.
As political alignments continue to shift ahead of future electoral cycles, the former deputy vice president reiterated the critical need for absolute transparency from election administrators.
He cautioned that the management of future ballots must strictly respect the actual popular vote to prevent a recurrence of past electoral disputes.
