Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has acknowledged that the government failed Kenyans during the 2024 Finance Bill controversy, particularly in how it communicated with the public and handled participation in the legislative process.
According to Murkomen, the government could have managed the situation differently before the protests escalated. His remarks come as the administration continues to face questions about the lessons it drew from the demonstrations that shook the country in June and July 2024.
The protests, largely driven by young Kenyans, intensified after Parliament passed the Finance Bill. Demonstrators eventually breached Parliament on June 25, 2024, while the unrest spread to different parts of the country.
President Ruto later declined to sign the Bill, saying he had listened to Kenyans and would withdraw it. Parliament subsequently deleted all its clauses, bringing the legislative process to an end.
Murkomen’s admission now raises fresh questions about whether the government has fully absorbed the lessons of that period.
The issue could become increasingly significant as Kenya moves toward the 2027 elections, when public trust, government accountability and citizen participation are expected to remain major subjects of political debate.
For an administration seeking to defend its record, acknowledging past mistakes may also place greater attention on whether concrete changes have followed those lessons.
