NAIROBI, Kenya — Tension is escalating across the country as the politics of “goonism” increasingly takes center stage ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 general election.
Despite recent stern warnings from Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, violent altercations involving hired youth continue to mar political gatherings, raising serious safety concerns.
The latest flashpoint occurred during a United Democratic Alliance (Alliance (UDA) function in Kuresoi, Nakuru County. A video capturing the chaotic scene has since gone viral on social media, sparking widespread public outrage.
The event, which was organized by Nakuru County Governor Susan Kihika, degenerated into a battlefield as rival factions attacked one another with impunity.
According to eyewitness accounts and reports filtering from the ground, the violent clash involved two opposing camps. It is alleged that one group of youth belonged to Governor Kihika’s faction, while the rival group was allied with the local area Member of Parliament, Samuel Mutai.

What was meant to be an official development function quickly turned into a chaotic shouting and physical match, forcing attendees to flee for safety.
The incident highlights a worrying nationwide trend where political leaders are increasingly accompanied by organized youth groups tasked with heckling opponents or violently disrupting rival events.
While Inspector General Douglas Kanja recently vowed to ruthlessly “crush” these criminal gangs, critics argue that the police service has not done enough to deter political financiers.
At the time of going to press, local police authorities in Nakuru had not issued a definitive statement regarding the exact trigger of the violence, the number of casualties, or whether any arrests had been made.
As the 2027 political alignment takes shape, citizens are calling for stricter enforcement of the law to prevent political violence from becoming the norm.
