A video circulating widely on social media has ignited heated debate after a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Member of Parliament was captured threatening to physically assault a voter during a public function.
The incident, which reportedly took place at a community fundraiser, has drawn sharp reactions from Kenyans across the political divide.
According to the footage, leaders had gathered to contribute money for a resident in need when the situation took an unexpected turn. The MP, identified as Bomet East legislator Yegon Richard Kipkemoi, took the microphone to address the crowd.
Moments later, he appeared visibly angered by chants from some attendees shouting “one term,” a phrase commonly used by voters to signal dissatisfaction with an elected leader and an intention not to re-elect them.

In the video, the MP is heard issuing a stern warning, claiming he would “deal with” anyone who continued shouting the slogan. His remarks, interpreted by many as a threat of violence, immediately drew criticism online, with users accusing him of intolerance and abusing his position of power.
The clip has since gone viral, prompting a flood of reactions on platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and TikTok.
Many Kenyans condemned the MP’s conduct, arguing that leaders should respect freedom of expression, especially in public forums.
Others warned that such behavior could cost him politically, noting that intimidation of voters often backfires at the ballot box.
Some users reminded the legislator that chants like “one term” are part of democratic expression and reflect the will of the people. “If you can’t take criticism, you don’t deserve leadership,” one commenter wrote. Another added that threatening voters only strengthens opposition resolve.
The incident has also reignited conversations about political tolerance, accountability, and the conduct of leaders at grassroots events.
While no official statement had been issued by the MP by the time of publication, pressure continues to mount from the public and civil society groups calling for restraint, respect, and adherence to democratic values.
As the 2027 political landscape slowly takes shape, incidents like this underline the growing tension between leaders and an increasingly vocal electorate.
