NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is facing mounting trouble at home following the tragic death of gospel artist Rachel Wandeto.
Wandeto succumbed to severe burn injuries at Kenyatta National Hospital after being doused with petrol and set ablaze in Mwiki, Nairobi.
The brutal attack allegedly targeted her for her political beliefs after she went viral for tattooing President William Ruto’s image on her chest alongside the words “Two Terms.”
Investigations Target Incitement
While Gachagua is currently in the United Kingdom fundraising for the Olkalau by-election and his 2027 political ambitions, political temperatures are rising rapidly in Kenya.
Speaking to journalists at Harambee House, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen condemned the horrific incident, warning that political leaders suspected of inciting ethnic animosity and political intolerance will face full-scale investigations.
Authorities are probing whether toxic rhetoric from certain political factions contributed to the hostile climate that led to the fatal assault.
Outrage Over Toxic Rhetoric
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation across the country, with commentators demanding immediate accountability. Political observers have warned that “reckless incitement” and tribal division threaten the nation’s democratic foundation.
Critics argue that many residents are being subjected to political persecution and fear of extremist attacks fueled by divisive narratives.
“No Kenyan should fear attacks, intimidation, or even death simply because they support a different political side or openly back the government,” stated Makarena, a prominent commentator, calling out the NCIC and human rights activists for their silence.
Interior CS Murkomen, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, and DCI Director Mohamed Amin have been urged to move swiftly to arrest the perpetrators.
As pressure builds, the spotlight remains firmly on Gachagua and his allies to answer for statements that critics claim are driving Kenya down a dangerous path.
