NAIROBI, Kenya — Raila Odinga Jr., the head of the late opposition leader Raila Odinga’s family, has officially fulfilled a sentimental promise made to Kenyans following his father’s passing.
Taking to social media, Junior shared a video showcasing the fully restored iconic red Hummer H3—widely referred to by supporters as the “Hammer”—which famously defined his father’s energetic 2007 presidential campaign trail.
The vehicle, a powerful symbol of political resilience that once electrified massive crowds across the nation, had fallen into disuse and was abandoned before the elder Odinga’s demise in October 2025.
Days after his father’s passing, Junior publicly vowed to refurbish the machine, preserve its history, and bring it back to its former glory.
In his social media post, Junior expressed his delight at completing the restoration project, noting that he wants the public to experience the piece of history firsthand before it enters its permanent home.

“A story of Restoration,” Raila Junior stated. “My initial idea was to take it to the museum, though I’d love it for Kenyans to interact with it before I do. #Godbless”
Political commentators and former close aides of the late Prime Minister have praised the initiative, describing it as a timely and befitting move to safeguard an indispensable chapter of Kenya’s democratic journey.
Originally gifted to the late “Baba” by political benefactors during the 2007 elections, the Hummer quickly transcended being a mere utility vehicle to become an enduring political brand.
According to the family’s plan, the restored “Hammer” will embark on a brief public tour, allowing passionate supporters to interact with the historic vehicle one last time. Following the tour, it will be safely transported to its final resting place at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga family mausoleum in Bondo, Siaya County.
