Orengo Defies Ruto’s Warning, Calls for Mass Turnout in June 25 Protests
Nairobi — Siaya County Governor James Orengo has sparked intense political debate across Kenya after releasing a video online calling for mass participation in planned national demonstrations.
The governor’s video message comes just days after President William Ruto issued a stern warning to opposition leaders and civil society groups, demanding an end to protests that his administration claims threaten national stability and economic progress.
The presidency had cautioned that law enforcement would firmly deal with any disruptions.
Undeterred by the Head of State’s executive warning, Governor Orengo took to digital platforms to rally citizens. In the video, which has quickly gone viral, the prominent opposition figure describes the upcoming action as a vital day of “remembrance and resistance.”

He urged Kenyans to wake up early and hit the streets to honor those who lost their lives in previous anti-government demonstrations and to demand accountability over governance and economic policies.
“We must come out in large numbers,” Orengo stated in the address, challenging the executive branch to respect the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
He added that for those unable to march, staying away from work to leave the streets empty would serve as a powerful testament against government heavy-handedness.
The post has elicited highly mixed reactions online. While some social media users praised Orengo for standing firm against state intimidation and championing civil liberties, others criticized the move as confrontational.
Detractors argue that defying the President’s directive could lead to unnecessary clashes with security agencies and further disrupt business operations.
With security agencies on high alert and opposition leaders holding their ground, the political standoff sets up a tense atmosphere across the country ahead of the planned demonstrations.
