Turkana County Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai has officially severed ties with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and formally joined President William Ruto’s ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The political shift highlights growing realignments in Northern Kenya as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Explaining his decision, Lomorukai emphasized the necessity of aligning Turkana County with the national government to secure key development projects and foster economic growth.
He noted that remaining in opposition politics risked isolating the region from essential state resources, infrastructure projects, and national decision-making platforms.
By taking up leadership within the ruling party, the county chief stated that Turkana stands a better chance of addressing persistent challenges related to security, water access, and infrastructure deficit.
As part of his integration into the ruling coalition, Lomorukai announced plans to establish and strengthen party structures across Turkana, including overseeing the opening of a main county office in Lodwar to coordinate grassroots activities.
He assured supporters that he would actively mobilize the local electorate to transform the region into a firm ruling party stronghold ahead of upcoming electoral contests.
Furthermore, the governor confirmed his intention to seek re-election for a second term under his new political home.
The departure of Lomorukai represents a notable blow to ODM’s historical footprint in Turkana County, long considered one of the opposition’s reliable voting blocs in the Rift Valley region.
Local leaders, Members of the County Assembly, and party officials accompanied the governor during the announcement, signaling widespread support for the transition among county leadership.
The move underscores a broader effort by the ruling administration to consolidate backing in marginalized counties through direct engagements with local executive leadership.
