Ruto Deploys Fresh Tactics in Ol-Kalou By-Election to Thwart Gachagua’s Comeback Bid
OL-KALOU, KENYA — The upcoming Ol-Kalou parliamentary by-election has transformed into a high-stakes proxy war between President William Ruto and his former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua.
Following recent political losses by Gachagua’s allies in Emurua Dikirr and Mbeere North, the impeached political heavyweight is determined to secure a defining victory in Nyandarua County using his new outfit, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
However, the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has unleashed a massive political and state machinery that has left political observers talking and Gachagua’s camp on high alert.
According to viral videos circulating online, UDA has abandoned traditional campaign methods in favor of aggressive, direct social welfare and infrastructure interventions.

In a bid to win over the influential elderly demographic, the ruling party’s machinery has been captured distributing essential household items, including shoes, mattresses, and blankets, across Ol-Kalou.
Beyond welfare distribution, the government has aggressively opened development taps in the region to swing voter sentiment.
The most notable development drawing widespread attention is the sudden revival of the old railway line linking Nairobi to Nyandarua—a project that residents note has been dormant for decades.
Kenyans online have widely noted that this combined approach of immediate local welfare and rapid infrastructure development could present an insurmountable challenge for Gachagua.
Observers point out that if the DCP candidate is to survive the onslaught ahead of the July ballot, Gachagua must move with speed to reinvent his strategy.
Without a counter-strategy to address UDA’s massive financial and state advantage, his ambitions of asserting dominance over the Mt. Kenya region face an uphill task.
