Chaos erupted at a funeral in Murang’a County after a Lamu Member of Parliament was heckled and forced to flee for her safety moments after addressing mourners in the presence of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The dramatic incident, which was captured on video and has since circulated widely on social media, has sparked sharp political reactions and condemnation.
The funeral was held in Makomboki village for the late Alice Wangari Gakuya, mother to Embakasi South MP Hon. James Gakuya. Several leaders affiliated with the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), including Gachagua, were in attendance.
Lamu Woman Representative Muthoni Marubu was initially welcomed warmly when she took to the microphone, drawing applause from the crowd.

However, the mood quickly shifted when Muthoni stated that she was born in Murang’a before relocating to Lamu with her family. She went on to complain that Kikuyu communities in Lamu were disadvantaged in terms of roads and infrastructure compared to those in parts of the Mount Kenya region.
Tensions escalated further when she boldly declared that she was a “two-term leader” while repeatedly flashing the two-finger sign in the air.
This declaration angered mourners, who began heckling her loudly. Despite the hostile reception, the MP reportedly continued with the gestures, prompting sections of the crowd to charge toward her.
She was swiftly whisked away by her bodyguards and rushed to her vehicle, which sped off amid shouting and confusion.
Embakasi South MP James Gakuya later asked Muthoni to leave, accusing her of causing unnecessary disruption at his family’s funeral. Many Kenyans online have blamed the MP for politicizing a solemn event.
However, former presidential advisor Moses Kuria has squarely blamed Rigathi Gachagua for the chaos. In a strongly worded statement, Kuria accused Gachagua of fostering intolerance and claimed there was a plot to target those perceived to oppose him.
Kuria condemned the alleged assault on Muthoni, calling Gachagua “a coward, a despot and a dangerous man,” and warned that he had “crossed the red line,” signaling an escalation in political tensions within the region.
