Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was on Friday left in an awkward position after a member of Parliament openly declared support for President William Ruto’s second term during a public event in Murang’a County, right in front of him.
The dramatic moment, captured on video and widely shared online, has since sparked intense debate across political circles and social media platforms.
The incident took place at the home of Embakasi South Member of Parliament James Gakuya, who was hosting leaders and residents for the burial ceremony of his late mother.
The gathering had drawn several high-profile politicians, including Gachagua, who was flanked by his allies such as Laikipia Senator John Methu and the host, MP James Gakuya.

For most of the event, proceedings were calm and respectful as leaders took turns to address mourners.
However, the atmosphere shifted when Lamu County Woman Representative Muthoni rose to speak. In her address, she boldly declared that she would support President William Ruto for a second term, chanting “two terms” before the crowd.
She went further to argue that Lamu County was still underdeveloped compared to parts of the Mount Kenya region, adding that continued support for Ruto’s leadership was necessary to spur development in her county.
Her remarks did not sit well with a section of the mourners, many of whom are perceived to support Gachagua or oppose the President’s second-term bid.
The crowd quickly erupted into loud heckling, forcing security and organizers to intervene. Amid the chaos, the Woman Representative was compelled to cut short her speech and leave the venue.
Throughout the incident, Gachagua was seen watching silently as events unfolded, making no attempt to intervene. The video has since fueled speculation about deepening political divisions within Mount Kenya and the broader realignments ahead of the next general election.
Analysts say the episode highlights the growing tension between leaders allied to President Ruto and those perceived to be charting a different political path.
