Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made a bold political declaration targeting traders at Gikomba Market, promising sweeping changes should he unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
In a video circulating widely online, Gachagua is seen addressing a large crowd of traders during a visit to the bustling Nairobi market on April 2, 2026.
He was accompanied by key opposition figures including Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, signaling a show of unity among leaders seeking to challenge the current administration.
While speaking to the traders, Gachagua pledged that his first priority upon assuming office would be to “return Gikomba to the common mwananchi.”
He alleged that the recent demolition of a 15-acre section of the market was orchestrated to benefit a select group of powerful individuals eyeing the land for private development.

“The government must serve the people, not dispossess them,” Gachagua declared, drawing cheers from the crowd.
He further accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of implementing policies that hurt ordinary Kenyans, particularly small-scale traders who rely on informal markets for their livelihoods.
The opposition leaders echoed similar sentiments, criticizing what they described as economic hardships and lack of inclusivity under the current regime.
They urged traders to remain united and support what they termed as a people-centered leadership in the upcoming elections.
However, allies of President Ruto have previously defended the government’s actions, maintaining that redevelopment efforts in informal markets are aimed at improving infrastructure, safety, and long-term economic sustainability.
As political temperatures begin to rise ahead of 2027, Gachagua’s remarks at Gikomba underscore the growing battle for influence among Kenya’s political heavyweights, with informal sector voters emerging as a key battleground.
