Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday found himself in a tense and chaotic situation during a campaign tour in Narok Town, where he had joined a group of leaders drumming up support for the Democratic Change Party (DCP) candidate ahead of the upcoming by-elections.
According to a video seen by our newsroom, the rally began smoothly as Gachagua addressed residents along the Suswa Highway. Supporters had gathered in large numbers, and the former DP appeared relaxed as he made his remarks atop his campaign vehicle.
However, the atmosphere shifted abruptly when a group of youths began pelting stones toward the motorcade, forcing security personnel to intervene.
Moments later, police officers arrived at the scene, reportedly to clear the highway, which had been earmarked for the movement of the former DP’s entourage. In the ensuing confusion, officers lobbed teargas canisters to disperse the increasingly rowdy crowd.

The combination of stone-throwing and the heavy teargas prompted Gachagua’s security detail to equip him with protective headgear for his safety.
The video shows the former second-in-command briefly ducking for cover as his bodyguards surrounded him and urged him to remain inside the vehicle while they assessed the situation. Campaign staff were also seen scrambling to reposition the sound system and shield other leaders on the podium.
Local leaders allied to the DCP later condemned the incident, alleging that the attack was politically engineered to destabilize their rally. They called on the police to conduct swift investigations and ensure the safety of all candidates and supporters during the campaign period.
Gachagua, who resumed his address shortly after calm was restored, urged supporters to maintain peace, insisting that intimidation would not derail the party’s mission in the region.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
