LONDON, UK — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faced a hostile reception during his ongoing tour of the United Kingdom after being put on the spot over his sudden change of heart regarding President William Ruto’s administration.
Gachagua, who is in the UK to raise funds for the Democratic Congress Party (DCP) candidate in the upcoming Ol-Kalou by-election and lay the groundwork for his 2027 presidential bid, has spent the week holding high-profile press briefings.
In his addresses, he has heavily criticized President Ruto, particularly blaming the Head of State for failing to manage Kenya’s escalating fuel crisis.

However, the tide turned during a heated interview on Wednesday, May 20, 2026. The former second-in-command was cornered by journalists and attendees who demanded to know why he remained silent while enjoying the perks of office, only to “see the evil” in the administration after his impeachment.
Critics questioned his moral authority to shout about a “Ruto one-term” agenda, accusing him of political opportunism.
Gachagua’s Defense
Pressed to explain his past silence, a visibly defensive Gachagua dismissed the narrative that he only found his voice after being ousted. He maintained that he was never a passive bystander in government.
“I did not start speaking out today. I told President Ruto the truth to his face while I was inside the government, and that is precisely the reason why I was engineered out of office and impeached,” Gachagua stated.
The Road to 2027
The UK tour marks Gachagua’s boldest step yet to re-engineer his political career outside the United Kingdom Democratic Alliance (UDA) umbrella.
Observers note that while his fundraising efforts for the Ol-Kalou seat are crucial, his biggest hurdle remains convincing Kenyans that his current crusade against Ruto is driven by public interest rather than political grievance.
