Drama at Jacaranda Grounds as Crowd Chooses Sifuna Over Babu Owino
NAIROBI, Kenya — Dramatic scenes unfolded at the historic Jacaranda Grounds in Embakasi East during a high-octane rally organized by the Linda Mwananchi movement.
What was intended to be a unified show of political strength turned awkward for local MP Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, after the crowd openly rejected him in favor of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
The Linda Mwananchi team had spent the day traversing Nairobi County to mobilize support, drawing massive turnouts as they swept through Marikiti and Gikomba markets before heading to Embakasi East for their main address. Led by Sifuna, the procession showcased deep political groundwork across the capital.
However, tension flared during the speeches when speakers put a direct choice to the audience regarding who should take up the mantle to replace the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Honorable Raila Odinga.

Despite hosting the rally in his home turf of Embakasi East, Babu Owino—who has frequently positioned himself as the rightful heir to Odinga’s political throne—watched helplessly as the roaring crowd overwhelmingly chanted Sifuna’s name.
The deafening chorus left no doubt about the crowd’s preference, directly undercutting Owino’s ambitions on his own ground. Visible discomfort swept across the podium as the audience repeatedly drowned out attempts to sway support back toward the local lawmaker.
Stepping up to the microphone amid the loud endorsement for the Senator, a humbled Owino was forced to address the crowd’s clear stance.
Making a direct declaration regarding the political leadership dynamic, Owino acknowledged the crowd’s sentiment, publicly reaffirming unity within the Linda Mwananchi ranks while conceding to Sifuna’s roaring popular support in the capital.
The startling turn of events signals shifting political tides within Nairobi’s opposition strongholds as leaders race to consolidate influence ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
