Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has found himself at the centre of a fresh political storm after allegations emerged linking him to an alleged scheme aimed at weakening the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Kenya’s main opposition party.
Uhuru Kenyatta retired from active politics in 2022 following the general election in which his preferred candidate, the late ODM party leader Raila Odinga, failed to clinch the presidency.
However, weeks after the burial of Raila Odinga, new claims have surfaced suggesting that the former Head of State is now working behind the scenes to destabilize the party he once publicly supported.
Speaking to residents on December 24, 2025, in Suna East Constituency, Suna East Member of Parliament Honorable Junet Mohammed alleged that Uhuru has been approaching senior ODM members with lucrative promises in an attempt to lure them into a new political formation described as the “United Opposition.”
According to Junet, those being targeted are allegedly being promised more than KSh1 billion to abandon ODM.

Junet further maintained that ODM has no intention of exiting the current broad-based government arrangement. He warned that beginning next year, the party will publicly name and shame individuals suspected of engaging in secret dealings meant to undermine party unity.
“These attempts will not succeed. ODM remains firm, and we are committed to the broad-based government,” Junet told the crowd, adding that the party leadership is closely monitoring internal loyalty.
The remarks come amid growing unease within ODM over the implementation of the ten-point agenda agreed upon between President William Ruto and the late Raila Odinga. Just a day earlier, ODM Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi warned that the party could reconsider its participation in the broad-based government if the agreement is not fully honored.
Similar sentiments have been echoed by Siaya Governor James Orengo and ODM Secretary General Senator Edwin Sifuna, who have both raised concerns about accountability and respect for the coalition agreement.
As political tensions continue to rise, the unfolding developments are expected to shape ODM’s internal dynamics and Kenya’s broader political landscape in the coming months.
