The stability of Kenya’s broad-based government is once again under scrutiny following fresh developments involving the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
The two parties entered into a working agreement under the stewardship of the late ODM leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto, guided by a ten-point agenda meant to foster unity and fast-track key reforms ahead of the 2027 General Election.
However, recent events suggest that cracks may be emerging within the arrangement. According to a video that has been circulating widely on social media, ODM has taken disciplinary action against some of its members accused of openly associating with UDA and campaigning for ODM supporters to abandon the party in favour of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
In Vihiga County, ODM party officials confirmed that they had resolved to expel several members found guilty of violating the party constitution.
The officials argued that the affected individuals had engaged in activities that undermined the party’s values and loyalty by promoting UDA interests while still claiming ODM membership.

“The ODM constitution is very clear on party discipline and allegiance. You cannot serve two masters,” one county official said, adding that the decision was meant to protect the integrity of the party as it navigates the post-Raila Odinga era.
The expulsions have sparked intense political debate, with analysts interpreting the move as a possible sign of deeper tensions within the broad-based government.
Some observers argue that while ODM and UDA may cooperate at the national level, grassroots politics remain highly competitive, making such conflicts inevitable.
Others believe the action sends a strong signal that ODM is keen on reasserting its independence and reorganising its base ahead of future political contests.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, many expect similar confrontations as parties seek to consolidate support.
For now, the latest development has reignited questions about how solid the broad-based arrangement truly is—and whether unity at the top can withstand pressure from the ground.
