President William Ruto could be headed for a difficult political negotiation ahead of the 2027 General Election after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party issued fresh demands before backing his re-election bid.
The demands come at a time when ODM is still trying to reorganize itself following the passing of its longtime leader, the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
For weeks, ODM has appeared divided on the question of whether to fully support President Ruto or remain in opposition.
While a section of ODM-allied leaders has openly declared support for Ruto’s 2027 bid, others insist that any cooperation must be based on structured negotiations and tangible political benefits for the party.
Speaking in Lugari during a visit to the home of the late former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, ODM Minority Whip in the National Assembly Junet Mohamed made it clear that the party will not offer its support for free.

Junet challenged President Ruto to formally engage ODM leadership and spell out what the party stands to gain from such an alliance.
According to Junet, ODM remains the largest and most nationally represented party in the country, with strong political presence spanning Nyanza, Western Kenya, parts of Rift Valley, the Coast, North Eastern, and Turkana regions.
He argued that such influence cannot be ignored or taken lightly in any serious re-election strategy.
Junet stated that ODM expects clear commitments, including the number of parliamentary seats, cabinet positions, and policy considerations that would be allocated to the party in a possible power-sharing arrangement.
He warned that vague promises would not be enough to convince ODM lawmakers and supporters.
The remarks have reignited debate within ODM, exposing internal differences over the party’s future direction. As the 2027 race slowly takes shape, it remains to be seen whether President Ruto will heed the party’s demands or risk facing a divided but influential opposition bloc.
