For days, Kenyans have been gripped by questions surrounding the mysterious white Toyota Probox that was captured on CCTV entering a petrol station moments after the late Lugari Member of Parliament, Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, left the same premises shortly before his fatal road accident.
The brief appearance of the vehicle, followed by the tragic crash that claimed Jirongo’s life, fueled intense public speculation and demands for answers on social media and in political circles.
Now, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has finally shed light on the identity of the vehicle’s owner and the circumstances that placed the Probox at the scene that night.
In a detailed progress report released to the public, detectives confirmed that the vehicle, registration number KDJ 564E, is owned by Hon. William Mutai, the Member of County Assembly for Keringet Ward and the Majority Leader of the Nakuru County Assembly, who is affiliated with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.
According to the DCI, a team of detectives travelled to Keringet in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, where they traced and interviewed individuals linked to the Probox after it was spotted on CCTV footage at Eagol Petrol Station.
Statements recorded during the inquiry established that although the vehicle is registered to Hon. Mutai, it is managed by his wife.

The investigators revealed that on December 11, 2025, Hon. Mutai’s wife allegedly hired out the vehicle to one Denis Kipyegon Koech.
Koech intended to transport family members to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to receive their son, who was returning to Kenya from New Mexico University in the United States.
The family reportedly left Keringet on December 12, 2025, arriving at JKIA at around 5:00 p.m. Their son’s flight landed later that night at approximately 10:00 p.m., after which the family began their return journey shortly after midnight.
While travelling back to Keringet, the family stopped at Eagol Petrol Station in Karai to refill wiper fluid due to poor visibility caused by weather conditions.
It was during this brief stop that they allegedly observed Hon. Jirongo exiting the station and heading towards Nairobi. Moments later, as they were still at the station, they reportedly heard a loud bang and witnessed a bus dragging the deceased’s vehicle following the collision.
The DCI further stated that after leaving the petrol station, the Probox occupants briefly stopped near the accident scene at the request of a petrol station guard, who sought assistance in rescuing the victim.
They did not alight from the vehicle but instead used their headlights to illuminate the scene, as it was dark and there were no other vehicles at the time.
They later left after more motorists arrived and traffic began to build up, eventually reaching home at around 6:00 a.m., where they learned that the accident victim was Hon. Cyrus Jirongo.
Despite the explanation, the DCI emphasized that investigations are still ongoing. Detectives are interrogating the veracity of the claims made and have reassured the family, friends, and the people of Kenya that the probe will be thorough, impartial, and guided strictly by evidence, as the country continues to mourn the loss of the veteran legislator.
