Nairobi, Kenya – President William Ruto found himself under intense scrutiny after posting a message in solidarity with former U.S. President Donald J. Trump, following an attempted assassination on Trump.
Ruto’s statement, posted on social media, sparked outrage among Kenyans, who criticized him for prioritizing foreign issues over pressing domestic concerns.
In his message, President Ruto stated, “On behalf of the people and government of the Republic of Kenya, I wish to add my voice to those condemning the recent attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald J. Trump.
I extend my deepest sympathies to President Trump, his family, and the families of the victims of this shocking, heinous act. In these troubling times, I take this opportunity to recommit to the democratic ideals we share with the people of the United States of America.
Wishing @realDonaldTrump a speedy and full recovery.”The post quickly drew criticism from Kenyans, many of whom questioned the President’s priorities.
Social media users highlighted ongoing issues within Kenya, particularly the recent spate of police brutality during anti-government protests that began a few weeks ago.
Several Kenyans have been shot dead in these protests, fueling public anger and demands for accountability.
One user commented, “Instead of addressing the violence and police brutality in our own country, our President is busy sending sympathies to a foreign leader. This is unacceptable.”
Another wrote, “Mr. President, stop police brutality at home before praying for foreigners.” The criticism underscores a growing discontent among Kenyans who feel that their leaders are not adequately addressing domestic issues.
The anti-government protests, sparked by economic grievances and political disillusionment, have been met with a heavy-handed response from law enforcement, resulting in fatalities and widespread condemnation.
As the backlash continues, President Ruto’s message of solidarity with Trump has inadvertently highlighted the urgent need for addressing internal issues, particularly the calls for an end to police brutality and greater accountability within the Kenyan government.
