Orengo Sets the Record Straight on Opposition Unity Following Absence from Linda Mwananchi Retreat
NAIROBI, KENYA — Siaya County Governor James Orengo has broken his public silence over his political trajectory, clarifying his position within the opposition amidst growing speculation regarding his commitment to the Linda Mwananchi movement.
The veteran politician’s prolonged absence from key public engagements raised questions after he skipped a high-profile leadership retreat in Nairobi.
During that crucial meeting, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was formally endorsed as the de facto party leader and presidential candidate for the Linda Mwananchi initiative ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
Orengo’s non-attendance ignited intense political chatter, with critics and observers questioning whether a rift had emerged inside the opposition outfit.

Moving to calm the speculation, Governor Orengo issued an official press release via his social media platforms to clear the air regarding his standing. In the statement, the governor reaffirmed his allegiance to the broader opposition agenda and dismissed rumors that he had abandoned the reform movement.
“I support the struggle for change which cannot be achieved without unity and positive political action,” Orengo stated. “We are participating in this journey with the launch of a political vehicle and remain committed to opposition unity and identification of one presidential candidate.”
He further commended the progress made by the political outfit, adding, “We laud the Linda Mwananchi success story and remain steadfast. Aluta continua!”
Orengo’s clarification provides relief to supporters of the movement who viewed his absence as a potential sign of division. As political realignments take shape ahead of the upcoming election cycle, the Siaya governor’s statement reinforces a shared commitment to building a formidable, united opposition front.
