The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has signaled a bold political stance ahead of the 2027 General Election, declaring its intention to secure the Deputy President position in any potential power-sharing agreement with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Speaking during a Linda Mwananchi initiative rally in Mombasa County, ODM leaders emphasized that the party would not settle for a lesser role if it enters into negotiations with President William Ruto’s camp.

The declaration marks a significant shift in coalition dynamics as early political alignments for 2027 begin to take shape.

Homa Bay Governor and ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga publicly endorsed former Cabinet Secretary Ali Hassan Joho as the party’s preferred candidate for the Deputy President slot.

According to Wanga, Joho possesses the political experience, national appeal, and loyalty required to represent ODM at the highest level of government.

“ODM must be at the center of any serious political arrangement. If UDA retains the presidency, then ODM rightfully takes the deputy position,” Wanga stated, drawing cheers from supporters at the coastal rally.

The endorsement of Joho appears to sideline other influential figures within the party, including Oburu Odinga, who has been associated with ODM’s traditional strongholds, and Wanga herself, despite her senior role.

Analysts interpret the move as a strategic attempt to broaden ODM’s appeal beyond its core bases by fronting a coastal leader with a strong national profile.

The announcement is expected to intensify political debate within both ODM and UDA, as questions emerge over whether President Ruto would be willing to accommodate such demands.
