Trans Nzoia County Governor His Excellency George Natembeya has stirred national debate after making controversial remarks regarding the burial of the late former Lugari Member of Parliament, Honorable Cyrus Jirongo.
Speaking at a public event, Natembeya addressed the growing speculation and conflicting accounts surrounding Jirongo’s sudden death, which has dominated discussions across the country, particularly in the Western region.
According to Natembeya, Luhya cultural traditions provide a spiritual way of dealing with unresolved deaths.
He claimed that Jirongo should be buried with a torch, a symbolic item in Luhya customs, meant to ensure that the truth eventually comes out.
Natembeya stated that, traditionally, burying someone with a torch is believed to spiritually “light the way,” haunting anyone involved in wrongdoing until justice is revealed.

The governor’s remarks come amid confusion over how the fatal accident occurred along the Nakuru–Nairobi highway.
Two key eyewitness accounts have sharply contradicted each other, fueling suspicion and public curiosity.
The driver of a Climax bus involved in the crash claimed that Jirongo allegedly joined the highway from a petrol station without properly checking for oncoming vehicles.
According to the driver, the late politician attempted to overlap traffic and was hit in the process.
However, watchmen working near the scene have given a different version of events. They insist that there was no traffic at the time Jirongo entered the highway and that he had only driven for a few seconds after leaving the petrol station before the collision occurred.
They further stated that Jirongo was heading toward Nairobi, while the bus was traveling toward Busia County.
Natembeya urged investigators to treat the matter with seriousness and transparency, noting that Jirongo was a significant political figure whose death deserves thorough scrutiny.
His comments have sparked mixed reactions, with some Kenyans supporting cultural perspectives in seeking truth, while others argue that only professional investigations can resolve the controversy surrounding the tragic incident.
