Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has broken his silence following the sudden withdrawal of security officers assigned to Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya on Tuesday.
The move sparked public concern after Governor Natembeya took to his social media platforms, alleging that the withdrawal was a calculated attempt to intimidate him ahead of Thursday’s by-election.
According to Natembeya, the abrupt removal of his security team left him exposed, especially coming just days after he was attacked in Kabuchai, Bungoma County.
His statement prompted widespread reactions online, with many Kenyans questioning the timing and demanding the immediate reinstatement of his bodyguards.

Responding to the accusations, CS Murkomen clarified that the decision was based on intelligence and security assessments conducted by the National Police Service.
He revealed that authorities had received reports indicating that some of the officers attached to Natembeya, as well as individuals within his circle, were allegedly engaging with groups described as “goons” to intimidate and terrorize residents during the heated campaign period.
Murkomen said that preliminary investigations pointed to potential misuse of state security resources, prompting the police to act swiftly.
“The withdrawal was a precautionary measure as investigations continue. The safety of the public remains a top priority,” he explained, dismissing claims that the move was politically motivated.
The development has stirred mixed reactions among Kenyans, with supporters of the governor accusing the government of unfairly targeting him.
Others have called on the police to ensure neutrality and maintain order ahead of the highly anticipated by-election set for tomorrow.
As tensions rise, all eyes remain on the security agencies and the Interior Ministry to ensure that the electoral process in the region proceeds peacefully and without further controversy.
