Mount Kenya Rebellion: Nyandarua Governor Badilisha Dumps UDA for DCP in Major Blow to Ruto’s 2027 Plan
President William Ruto faces a deepening political crisis in the vote-rich Mount Kenya region ahead of 2027. Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha has officially abandoned the ruling United Democratic Alliance party.
Accompanied by Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Badilisha joined the Democracy for Citizens Party at Wamunyoro. This high-profile exit follows a similar move by Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata.
UDA Strategy Crumbles as Key Mount Kenya Leaders Exit
The sudden defection delivers a massive blow to President Ruto’s reelection calculation. State House has recently focused on consolidating support in former opposition strongholds.
However, losing top leaders in Central Kenya severely weakens his original winning coalition.
“We must align directly with the wishes of our people,” Governor Badilisha declared at Wamunyoro. “The ground has shifted, and leadership requires listening to the electorate.”

Senator Methu emphasized that regional unity remains their highest priority going into the next general election.
“Our political journey takes a dynamic path today,” Senator Methu told supporters. “We are uniting our people to protect the economic future of Mount Kenya.”
Ruto’s campaign machine now faces an uphill battle to reclaim lost ground in the mountain.
