Matatu Operators Suspend Strike for One Week Following Government Talks
NAIROBI, Kenya — Matatu operators have officially suspended their ongoing nationwide strike for one week to pave the way for high-level consultations with the government.
The breakthrough follows severe transport paralysis and protests across major towns over skyrocketing fuel prices.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced the temporary truce, stating that the decision was reached after both parties agreed on the urgent need for structured dialogue to address the transport sector’s grievances.
“There was need for negotiations with the stakeholders at a high level, and they will take place within the next one week,” CS Murkomen stated.

The Interior Minister emphasized that halting the strike was a necessary step to create an enabling environment for discussions and to prevent further economic disruption and hardship for millions of commuting Kenyans.
The suspension comes as a relief to thousands of stranded commuters after the transport boycott escalated into pockets of violence, leading to blockaded roads, property damage, and several arrests.
A multi-agency government team is now expected to meet with the public transport leadership to find a sustainable solution to the fuel pricing dispute.
