Gachagua Calls for Action as Fuel Protests Turn Fatal in Kenya

LONDON, UK — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a stern call for government accountability following a wave of violent protests in Kenya that left at least four people dead.

Speaking from London on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, the leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) condemned the use of lethal force against citizens protesting record-high fuel prices.

The unrest, which began on Monday, saw major towns paralyzed by a nationwide transport strike. While the demonstrations were intended to be peaceful, they turned tragic when police reportedly opened fire on crowds, resulting in several fatalities from gunshot wounds.

Leaders allied with the United Opposition have joined Gachagua in slamming the state’s response, calling it an affront to the constitutional right to picket.

A Global Presser from London

Taking to his official Facebook page, Gachagua announced an international press conference scheduled for 1300hrs Kenyan Time (1100hrs UK Time) to address what he termed a “manufactured fuel crisis.”

“The blood of innocent Kenyans is on the hands of those who prioritize profit over the lives of the poor,” Gachagua stated in a viral post.

He urged his political allies and supporters to tune in for “specific directions” on the next steps for the opposition movement.

“The Truth Behind High Fuel Prices”

In a strategic move to highlight government hypocrisy, Gachagua shared a throwback video of President William Ruto (then Deputy President) fiercely criticizing the previous administration for high fuel costs.

By juxtaposing past promises with the current retail price of Ksh 214 per litre for petrol and Ksh 243 for diesel, Gachagua accused the current regime of exploiting Kenyans through “fraudulent” government-to-government fuel deals.
As the country remains on edge, the DCP leader’s address is expected to outline a roadmap for sustained mass action until the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) revises the prices downward.
