Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua appears to have firmly embarked on a new and unpredictable political path, a year after his dramatic impeachment. In the immediate aftermath of his removal from office, Gachagua projected a reconciliatory tone, particularly towards former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He urged leaders within the Kenya Kwanza administration to stop attacking Uhuru, insisting that the retired Head of State deserved respect as a national figure.
However, the political tide has shifted sharply in recent days. Gachagua, who had been perceived to be gravitating back toward Uhuru’s political circle, has now issued a surprising and direct attack against him — a move that has caught many Kenyans off guard.
Speaking to journalists in Embu, Gachagua dismissed the Jubilee Party as a “red wheelbarrow,” a remark widely interpreted as an insinuation that the party is secretly serving the interests of President William Ruto.

The statement ignited political debate, especially because it comes only days after Uhuru publicly cautioned Jubilee officials against targeting Gachagua, signaling that he did not view the former Deputy President as an enemy.
Political analysts now say Gachagua’s latest remarks amount to a veiled attack on Uhuru, particularly at a time when the former president has been reorganizing Jubilee’s leadership.
Uhuru recently unveiled former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as the party’s Deputy Party Leader and its intended presidential flagbearer under the United Opposition coalition.
Gachagua’s comments, if interpreted literally, suggest deep mistrust within the opposition alliance, and his words could further strain relations between factions loyal to Uhuru and those sympathetic to Gachagua’s political resurgence.
As the 2027 race continues to take shape, Gachagua’s sudden shift is expected to trigger fresh realignments — and possibly, a new wave of political tensions within the opposition bloc.
