SIAYA, Kenya — Siaya Governor James Orengo has fiercely protested the abrupt and unprocedural withdrawal of his personal and residential security detail, demanding an immediate reinstatement of the officers.
In a formal complaint addressed to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Governor Orengo revealed that his entire security team—including officers stationed at his Nairobi residence—was recalled on the evening of Tuesday, May 19, without any prior notice, official communication, or replacement arrangements.
“Yesterday evening… a highly irregular and deeply concerning action was taken by the national security apparatus: the sudden, unprovoked withdrawal of my entire personal security detail,” Orengo stated in a separate press release.

A Constitutional Entitlement, Not a Favor
The Governor condemned the move as a breach of protocol, emphasizing that security for elected top state officials is a legal mandate rather than a discretionary privilege.
- Statutory Right: Orengo maintained that security ensures leaders can execute their official duties safely and without fear of harm or compromise.
- Lack of Due Process: The decision was executed overnight, leaving the county boss entirely exposed at both his private and official residences.
Calls for Urgent Action
In his official correspondence, which was also copied to the Ministry of Interior, the Council of Governors, and the Siaya County Police Commander, Orengo demanded an immediate explanation from the police leadership. He urged swift corrective action to resolve the standoff and prevent any disruption to his official responsibilities.
Despite the security breach, Governor Orengo assured constituents that his county administration remains undeterred.
He affirmed that his team would continue to deliver on their mandate to the people of Siaya with “enthusiasm and patriotism” while awaiting a formal response from the Inspector General.
