For years, residents across Kiambu County have grappled with long queues, referrals to distant facilities and limited access to specialised medical services.

Expectant mothers, the elderly and patients with chronic illnesses often bore the brunt of overstretched hospitals, forcing many families to dig deep into their pockets or travel far from home in search of care.

Under the leadership of Governor Kimani Wamatangi, Kiambu County has constructed six new level four hospitals over the past three years, significantly boosting the region’s capacity to deliver advanced healthcare.

In addition, 26 level three hospitals have been established across various sub-counties, collectively adding 1,600 new beds and easing pressure on existing referral facilities.

Beyond new buildings, the county administration has focused on upgrading older hospitals to meet modern medical standards.

Facilities have been equipped with advanced diagnostic and treatment machines, including X-ray and ultrasound equipment, dialysis units and endoscopy machines.

These upgrades have reduced the need for patients to seek specialised tests and procedures in Nairobi or private hospitals, saving both time and money.

Health officials say the investments are aligned with the World Health Organisation’s emphasis on Universal Health Coverage (UHC), which calls for accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare for all.

By decentralising services and strengthening facilities at the grassroots, Kiambu is positioning itself as a model for county led healthcare reform.

Governor Wamatangi has repeatedly stated that healthcare remains a cornerstone of his administration, noting that strong health systems are critical to economic productivity and social well being.

He argues that improved facilities not only save lives but also restore dignity to residents who previously felt neglected by the public health system.

Residents in areas hosting the new hospitals have welcomed the developments, citing shorter waiting times and improved service delivery.

Medical staff have also reported better working conditions and enhanced ability to manage complex cases locally.

As Kenya continues its push towards UHC, Kiambu’s expanding network of hospitals and upgraded facilities underscores the growing role of county governments in shaping the future of healthcare delivery.
