The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is facing one of its most challenging moments as internal divisions continue to deepen following the death of its longtime party leader, Raila Odinga.
Once a united and formidable political force, ODM is now grappling with intense infighting as rival factions battle for control of the party’s future direction.
At the center of the storm are two senior leaders: ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Suna East Member of Parliament, who is also the National Assembly Minority Leader, Junet Mohammed. The fallout between the two has exposed deep-seated tensions within the party.
Junet has accused former President Uhuru Kenyatta of allegedly using Sifuna to destabilize ODM from within, claims that have further fueled the already heated debate.

In a sharp rebuttal, Sifuna hit back by alleging that Junet Mohammed siphoned funds meant for ODM agents during the 2022 general election, an act he claims contributed to Raila Odinga’s loss in the presidential race.
The exchange has divided opinion within ODM ranks, with supporters lining up behind either camp.
Homabay County Senator Honorable Moses Kajwang’ has now weighed into the debate, issuing a strong statement in defense of former President Uhuru Kenyatta while cautioning ODM leaders against rewriting history for political convenience.
In his statement, Kajwang’ reminded party members that Raila Odinga held Uhuru Kenyatta in high regard throughout his lifetime, a respect that did not diminish even after the 2022 electoral defeat.
“The 2022 election is water under the bridge and should not be used to cause confusion within ODM,” Kajwang’ stated. He urged party leaders to focus on unity and the broader vision of delivering Kenyans to the “proverbial Canaan.”
The senator further warned that continued infighting could weaken ODM’s influence, calling on the party to embrace all progressive forces committed to its long-term goals.
His remarks are seen as a direct appeal to calm tensions and refocus ODM on its mission amid growing uncertainty about its future leadership.
