Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Senator Edwin Sifuna has received a major reprieve after plans to impeach him were officially dropped, easing weeks of simmering tension within the party’s top leadership.
Earlier on, reports had emerged that a petition seeking Sifuna’s removal had been drafted by a senior ODM senator, accusing him of failing to toe the party line on several political positions.
The move had sparked intense debate within ODM ranks, with fears that the standoff could further deepen internal divisions.
However, in a significant turnaround, sources close to the party now confirm that the impeachment push has been abandoned. Migori County Senator Eddy Oketch, who had reportedly filed the petition to oust Sifuna from the powerful Secretary General position, has since withdrawn it.
Instead, he has opted for dialogue, urging senior party leadership to convene a meeting to address the disagreements amicably.

According to insiders, Senator Oketch has requested that consultations be led by senior ODM figures, including Dr. Oburu Odinga, to allow the party to resolve its internal issues away from the public spotlight. The shift is seen as a bid to preserve party unity at a time when ODM is navigating a delicate political phase.
In a statement released on the matter, ODM confirmed the change of course, emphasizing dialogue over punitive action.
“UPDATE: ODM has withdrawn its motion to expel Senator Edwin Sifuna, opting instead for dialogue and alternative dispute resolution to address ongoing internal disagreements. The decision follows wide consultations with party leadership and takes into consideration the founding spirit of the late Raila Amollo Odinga, who championed dialogue even with his fiercest critics.”
The statement further acknowledged that Senator Eddy Oketch had indeed petitioned for Sifuna’s removal but had since reconsidered his position.
Political observers say the decision is a win for internal cohesion and a boost for Sifuna, who remains a key figure in ODM’s national strategy. The coming days are now expected to see behind-the-scenes talks aimed at healing rifts and refocusing the party’s agenda.
