Tension gripped Kisumu on Sunday after dramatic scenes emerged of Edwin Sifuna’s motorcade being stoned along the Kisumu–Kericho highway. The incident, captured on video, shows a chaotic confrontation as unidentified youths hurled stones at the convoy, forcing a temporary halt.
In response, security personnel assembled by Sifuna and members of the Linda Mwanainchi initiative were seen chasing after the suspected attackers. The situation quickly escalated, with running battles reported along sections of the highway, further heightening fears of unrest ahead of the planned rally.
The clashes reflect a deepening political divide within the region. A faction allied to Oburu Odinga, linked to the “Linda ground” group, insists that Kisumu remains a “two-term zone,” openly backing President William Ruto’s re-election agenda.

The group has vowed not to allow Sifuna to hold rallies, accusing him of stirring unnecessary political tension.
On the other hand, Sifuna’s supporters have maintained a defiant stance, chanting “one term” slogans and calling on President Ruto to step down after his current term. The rival chants have intensified hostility between the two sides, raising concerns about potential violence.
Despite the disruptions, Sifuna, flanked by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Siaya Governor James Orengo, continued his journey toward the rally venue. His convoy, though slowed, was seen making steady progress under tight security.
As tensions continue to rise, many residents and leaders are now calling on security agencies to intervene swiftly. Observers warn that without immediate action, the escalating rivalry could spiral into broader unrest, threatening stability in the region ahead of key political activities.
