NAIROBI, Kenya — Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has broken his silence following a landmark High Court ruling that upheld the impeachment of his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, effectively cementing Kindiki’s position as Kenya’s second-in-command.
Delivering the highly anticipated judgment at the Milimani Law Courts, a three-judge bench comprising Justices Eric Ogola, Anthony Mrima, and Freda Mugambi dismissed Gachagua’s petition to overturn his ouster.
The judges ruled that the National Assembly and the Senate acted within their constitutional mandates when they removed Gachagua from office.
However, the court found fault with how the Senate handled the final stages of the process. The judges noted that the Senate infringed upon Gachagua’s right to a fair hearing by failing to accord him sufficient time to table his defense after he fell ill.

As a result of this procedural violation, the High Court awarded Gachagua KSh 50 million in constitutional damages, payable by the Senate.
Despite the financial compensation, the bench firmly declined to invalidate the impeachment outcome or revoke Kindiki’s appointment, noting that public participation was not required for the parliamentary approval of a new Deputy President.
Immediately following the ruling, Deputy President Kindiki took to his official social media platforms to address Kenyans. Keeping his reaction remarkably brief and composed amidst the high-stakes political drama, Kindiki posted a simple, reassuring message:
“It’s okay.”
The minimalist response has sparked widespread conversation online, with political analysts viewing it as an effort to lower political temperatures and project stability.
With the High Court’s ruling affirming the legitimacy of his office, Kindiki’s short statement signals a readiness to move past the contentious legal battles and focus fully on state responsibilities.
